When I was 19, one of my best friends and I decided to conclude our summer in Switzerland. We had both spent the preceding months studying abroad in the U.K., and felt this would be an exciting adventure. We settled on Bern (the capital) and Zurich (the most populous city), with the last of our savings to sustain us. Two of our friends from high school fortuitously happened to be in Switzerland at the same time, and as a quartet, we embarked on a wandering hike without a predetermined route. We treated ourselves to the occasional gelato, helped ourselves to fruit on unfamiliar trees, and cooked 90% of our meals. I miss being nineteen, learning how to create fun out of few resources.
